Yesterday, Parliament took a decision that strikes at the heart of our values and the sanctity of life. Almost 400 MPs voted in favour of decriminalising abortion after 24 weeks — a move that has rightly shocked many across the country.
What surprises me most is how quickly this was debated and pushed through. In less than two hours, a decision of such gravity was rushed through the Commons. Is this the mark of a government guided by compassion and humanity, or does it reveal the monsters on show? Judging by the haste and lack of genuine public scrutiny, it feels far more like the latter.
Let’s be clear: this is not about denying women support or compassion. It’s about upholding the principle that every life matters, including the life of the unborn child. The law as it stood already allowed for late-term abortions in cases where the mother’s health was at serious risk or where the baby had severe abnormalities. The question that must be asked is simple: what problem is this new law trying to solve?
The push for decriminalisation seems to have been driven by a handful of unusual cases during the pandemic, when changes in care led to tragic outcomes. But is it wise to rewrite our moral framework based on rare exceptions? Where is the public demand for abortion up to term? Who is calling for this, apart from a vocal minority in Parliament who see it as a “feminist issue” rather than a question of basic human rights?
By removing legal sanctions, we risk sending a dangerous message: that the rights of the unborn can be set aside for convenience. We also put vulnerable women at risk, potentially facing traumatic late-term procedures without proper medical oversight or support. Real solutions mean better access to healthcare, more support for mothers in crisis, and a society that values life at every stage.
This decision is out of touch with the values of ordinary Britons. It’s time for Parliament to listen to the people, not just the loudest activists. The rights of the unborn matter. So do the values that have made this country great.
