Andy Burnham Must Stand by the Principles He Pushed in 2022

Now that Andy Burnham is Prime Minister, the question is simple: will he stand by the same principles and values he was happy to promote back in 2022?

When the Conservatives changed leader, Burnham was clear that the public should have their say. He pushed the argument that Britain needed a general election, not another stitch-up in Westminster.

Now the situation has changed, but the principle should not. If Burnham believed then that a change at the top required a fresh mandate from the British people, he should believe exactly the same now.

This is about consistency

This is not about personalities. It is about political consistency, democratic accountability, and whether Labour believes in the same standards when it is in government as it demanded when it was attacking the Conservatives.

Too often in politics, principles are treated as useful slogans in opposition and inconvenient obstacles in power. That is exactly why this matters.

If Andy Burnham meant what he said in 2022, he should repeat that call now and back a general election. If he refuses, people will be entitled to ask whether those words were ever about principle at all.

Labour must be held to account

That is why this issue will not go away. Burnham is now being judged against his own words, and Labour is being judged against the standards it previously demanded from others.

Will Andy Burnham stand by his principles and values like he did in 2022?

Will he repeat the call for a general election now that he is the one benefiting from a change in leadership?

Or will this turn out to be yet another example of politicians saying one thing when it suits them, and doing another when power is within reach?
